Should I Write a Book?
The answer to the question no one ever asks me.
At least once a month, someone will ask me how they should write their book. Typically the person has a story, motivational message, a particular skill set, or a unique life experience they want to share with the world. I’m not one to rain on anyone’s parade, so I’ll spend time talking to them about how to start writing their book.
No one ever asks me if they should write a book. And that is the question you should ask if you think you want to spend the time and money it takes to produce a decent one.
Seriously, before you buy a book, sign up for a webinar, or attend a writer’s conference as a novice writer, ask yourself, should you write a book? The organizers of any writing conference will gladly take your money and register you for various classes because they assume you know what you need and you are ready to move to the book writing, or editing, or marketing phase.
The truth? If you are thinking about whether or not you should write a book, nine times out of ten the answer is NO. And that’s for a few reasons that have nothing to do with marketing, promotion, sales, or money. There is only one real reason to write a book, and I’ll get to that in a few paragraphs.
